Ann RichardsThis Wednesday, Former Governor Richards has passed away. The real "tough grandma" will be sorely missed as her laugh and smile were highly infectious. She was a beacon of hope for silver citizens with her fight with Osteoporosis. She took to her fight with esophageal cancer as she did with her battle with Osteoporosis. The good lord has other plans for her and brought her home. Your work was a success, may you enjoy retirement. Rest in peace

CAMPO Survey stinks!1. The region that includes Williamson, Travis, Hays, Bastrop, and Caldwell Counties was home to approximately 1.2 million people in 2000. This region is expected to more than double in population by the year 2035. If this growth occurs, which of the following statements best describes how you think the region should grow?

Libertarian Health Care - Part 2I'll start with the anti Libertarian trends in American medicine. Any changes which remove choice from individuals and puts it into the hands of government must eventually result in loss of liberty for individuals. From this perspective, the provision of health care by the government (a responsibility of the federal government not found anywhere in my copy of the Constitution) must enroll in Medicare and begin to pay premiums no choice allowed, that you can use this government mandated health care benefit you must go only to physicians who are approved by the government you can see that there is definite loss of choice involved. Even more coercive for physicians, once a physician has joined Medicare as a provider he or she must submit copious paperwork in order to unjoin and must resubmit paperwork every two years in order to remain a non-provider of Medicare services and should a non-provider physician accidentally have a claim for payment submitted to Medicare, even by the patient without the physician's knowledge, the physician faces heavy fines or even jail time. So the physician's freedom has been curtailed. And of course the taxpayer's choice on how to spend their own money has been lessened by the amount the government must tax them to pay for Medicare, currently 1.5% of every dollar you earn starting with the first dollar of earnings each year.

CAMPO SurveyConsidering the attitude that the CAMPO board has displayed at the toll road meetings I am surprised to see this on their web site. If this is anything short of dissolving a regional authority and leaving the mobility planning to the elected officials, then they can count on a poor score from me.

What would a Libertarian Health Care System Look Like?First of all, considering that Libertarianism is based on maximizing the freedom, independence and responsibility of the individual citizen, it would mostly be a "non-system". No prescription required! You could buy any medication you desired in any quantity at your local drugstore or online from any vendor in the world. Caveat emptor. About the only responsibility of the government might be to insure that the product you were buying was what it was labeled to be and that false advertising was not allowed. The "Pure Food and Drug Act" would be once again relegated to assuring that the drugs you buy are pure and unadulterated and will do what they claim to do. If you wanted to go to some sort of "health provider" and get a prescription, fine, if not fine also. Education as to the benefits and risks of medications would be required but need not be done by the government but could be done by the private sector with government oversight to assure that the information provided is unbiased. No license required! Any individual could be a "health care provider". You could spend your dollars (or the dollars your insurance company has agreed to spend on your behalf) on any sort of provider you want. Physician, nurse, chiropractor, holistic practitioner, acupuncturist, whatever would all be allowed to do what we now reserve to physicians. You contract with an individual to take a medical history, do a medical examination, and treat according to what you and they agree is proper treatment. If you chose to go to a chiropractor for your back pain or even for your lung cancer or your appendectomy, that would be your lookout.

Hey City Council "BUTT OUT"!Texas Crushed Stone Co. estimates about 80 years worth of mining remains on the more than 6,500 acres the Sneads' companies own near what has become a prime development intersection in this rapidly expanding city. "No, no, no," said Jim Stendebach, Round Rock's planning director. "Not 80 years, not 80 years." If you have been reading the news lately you can't help but NOT miss that the City of Round Rock is planning to annex TEXAS CRUSHED STONE company (TCS). You also read that TCS has been giving material, land, and money to Round Rock for years.

A short tale of a CommissionerWilliamson County Precinct 4 Commissioner Frankie Limmer assumed office in 1999. Since then he has expanded his real estate development activities in eastern Williamson County -- the area he represents on the court -- to include several major development companies currently building large housing subdivisions. Several of Limmer's business associates are also doing business with the county: Charles Crossfield, the Round Rock city attorney who has been negotiating many of the rights-of-way acquisitions for the county's $350 million road-bond projects; Dan Hejl, of the consulting firm Hejl, Lee & Associates, has done engineering work for at least one of the county's road-bond projects within Limmer's precinct; and Ted Hejl, the Taylor city attorney, who has also recently been cut a host of county checks for road-related bond work.

Let the double standards fly!Under the law, passed by the Republican-led state legislature in January 2006, paid voter registration workers must personally submit the voter registration cards to the state, rather than allow the organizations overseeing the drives to vet and submit them in bulk. By requiring paid canvassers to sign and put their addresses on the voter registration cards they collect, and by making them criminally liable for any irregularities on the cards, the rules have made it more difficult to use such workers, who most often work in lower-income and Democratic-leaning neighborhoods, where volunteers are scarce.

What's the real federal deficit? The federal government keeps two sets of books. The set the government promotes to the public has a healthier bottom line: a $318 billion deficit in 2005. The set the government doesn't talk about is the audited financial statement produced by the government's accountants following standard accounting rules. It reports a more ominous financial picture: a $760 billion deficit for 2005. If Social Security and Medicare were included — as the board that sets accounting rules is considering — the federal deficit would have been $3.5 trillion. For the rest of this story visit USA Today

A new lawsuit alleges Williamson County and some of its judges deny defendants the right to counsel. This lawsuit deals with misdemeanor cases that go through some of the courts. It alleges that sometimes defendants give up their cases to prosecutors. This new lawsuit clams that defendants who come through the courts on misdemeanor cases are sometimes not given proper information about the court system. "They're getting pressured every moment. County ConventionOn March 18th, the Williamson County Libertarian Party held its county convention. We talked about a little business for the up coming year. One thing is for certain, you will be getting a good deal more on the party communication. We also voted to move the Executive Committee Business Meetings, aka. the monthly meeting, to the FIRST Tuesday of every month. This is a better fit on everyone's schedule. ALSO, we are looking to move the meetings to a better location that is conductive to a business meeting environment. We still lean towards a restaurant since the meeting is right smack in the middle of dinner time for most people but we are not set on it.

Forums have been changed. There has been a changed in the forum software used. The new software has better features and is easier to administer. With the change comes a catch, the new forums use a seperate database backend so your WCLP site login will not authenticate access to the forums (single-sign on); a seperate login to the forums is needed (dual-sign on). The previous postings have been moved over to the new forums though, so nothing is lost in that regard. Any questions, comments, and compliments about the new forums can be directed to me, the WCLP IT Director. Any complaints should be directed to the WCLP Chairman. :-D

Round Rock water billing proposalThis is my latest idea to help reduce city government cost, increase citizen savings, AND promote environmentalism. I pitch this to, who I thought was the Utilites director, and he seemed to like the idea, sort of. He did say that they city will be moving to RF water meters that will allow the technical side of this proposal. I understand this is my *first version* of this proposal. I still have to plug in the numbers and run an analysis on this. Speaking in terms of principles this is semi-free market and semi-socialist. It still allows the city to retain ownership of the city's water but it allows free market pricing and application.

During that process I noticed the members could fill out a forum posting but it would not publish to the forums (or anywhere else for that matter). That problem has been fixed! I removed that process and you can now post a reply to any topic that allows reply comments.
