After a special called meeting of the City Council which saw local residents, friends, family and City staff gather to celebrate the end of Alan McGraw’s nine-year tenure as mayor of Round Rock, the newly-elected Mayor Craig Morgan and two councilmembers –  Place 1’s Tammy Young and Place 4’s Will Peckham – were sworn in to three-year terms during the regularly scheduled May 25 meeting.

“I keep going back to the word teamwork because that’s what it’s been,” McGraw said after gaveling-in his final meeting and watching the oath of office ceremonies. “By working together to solve a problem we can continue to set an example of how it (government) should be done.”

Prior to his election as mayor, Morgan had served as councilmember for Place 1 since 2011. He was also selected to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem in June 2016.

After taking the dais in a new role for the first time, Mayor Morgan spoke about his desire to continue moving the community forward, while also taking a moment to look back and thank former leadership, acknowledge the effort of his electoral opponents and express gratitude to the people of Round Rock for their continued support.

“I’ve got lots of big shoes to fill,” Morgan said. “There are a lot of challenges but I see them as opportunities.”

“I want to thank the citizens and friends who have entrusted me with this seat. I couldn’t be here if it weren’t for them or you.”

The newest member of the City Council, Young, secured her election as councilmember to Place 1 in a contested race without an incumbent as Morgan ran for the mayoral seat. After being sworn in, Young shared an enthusiastic message of appreciation and a desire to get to work for the community.

“I just want to say how truly honored I am to be here in this seat,” Young said. “There are so many people that helped me get here that I cannot possibly name them all, but I do want to say that I wouldn’t be here without the numerous volunteers that helped me through this campaign.”

Peckham, who was first elected to Place 4 in 2014 and also sworn in Thursday after his re-election to the same seat, made a point to acknowledge those citizens who took time to participate in the political process.

“I appreciate everyone who came out to vote,” he said. “Even those that didn’t vote for me – I look forward to talking with you.”

Peckham also recognized his family and offered a heartfelt exchange with his father, who was in attendance.

“Great decision a long time ago to move to Round Rock,” he said.

The next meeting of the City Council is scheduled for Thursday, June 8. Biographies of all councilmembers, meeting agendas and links to livestream and archived video recordings are available online: https://www.roundrocktexas.gov/about/city-council/.
