EMS Receives Statewide Recognition

At the Texas Department of State Health Services annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Conference in Fort Worth on Tuesday, Williamson County Emergency Medical Services received two statewide awards.  Each award honors a person or organization that exemplifies the best that EMS has to offer. The awards recipients were selected by a committee from the Texas Department of State Health Services from statewide nominations.

Kenny Schnell, director of Williamson County EMS, was named EMS Administrator of the Year. The EMS Administrator Award honors an administrator at the local, city, county, regional or state level who has made a positive contribution to EMS and is committed to building a strong team able to respond effectively.

Jeff Jarvis, MD, medical director of the Williamson County EMS System, was named EMS Medical Director of the Year.  The EMS Medical Director Award honors a physician who serves as a medical director for an EMS organization and continually demonstrates a commitment to excellent patient care.

Additionally, Round Rock Fire Department was named First Responder of the Year of the year. The First Responder Award honors a first responder organization that demonstrated leadership in medical first response in patient care and training. 

On November 8, Williamson County Emergency Medical Services held their bi-annual Recognition Ceremony.  The ceremony is a time for the department to celebrate and honor the work the paramedic’s performs on a daily basis.  During this past ceremony, the department recognized paramedics that were involved in the care and resuscitation of cardiac arrest patients, the delivery of babies, the Paramedic of the Year recipient, and retirement of a team member.

The department gave out eighteen (18) individual Phoenix awards for six cardiac arrest saves.  A Phoenix award is given to each paramedic who was involved in the care of the cardiac arrest patient.  The patient must present in a cardiac arrest, have a return of pulse, and be discharged from the hospital neurologically intact.

The department gave out sixteen (16) individual Stork awards for four field deliveries.  A Stork award is given to each paramedic who was involved in the field delivery of a baby.

The department also awarded Archer Scherer the 2014 Paramedic of the Year Award.  Archer was nominated by his peers and selected by his peers for this award.  Archer was recognized for his work in bettering the department in both operational and clinical areas.

The department also honored Nancy Hamilton and her retirement from Williamson County EMS.  Nancy was a dedicated team member for sixteen (16) years and served many citizens in her time with Williamson County EMS.
