Startup Weekend focuses on education

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Tech entrepreneurs and educators in Austin are nearing the end of 54 hours of work.

Teams spent the weekend trying to come up with new technology ideas to solve challenges facing education.

Startup Weekend Education was a three day event at Capital Factory Austin, providing an opportunity for anyone with an idea to build a startup with advice from coaches and mentors.

“After the weekend the plan is the team will execute the idea and come up with really great ideas to challenges in education,” said Sean Duffy, Startup Weekend Education Organizer.

The winners get help supporting their startup.

One team spent the weekend working on a concept to let students ask anonymous questions to a teacher.

“And it’s actually led by a 16-year-old high school student himself,” Duffy said. “It’s really cool to see we’re actually bringing problems right from the classroom to, you know, the place where we can create a solution for them.”

This evening, the teams will pitch to a team of judges. KXAN’s Kevin Schwaller will let you know what happens tonight at 9:00 on the CW Austin and on KXAN News at 10.
