AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Saturday evening, friends and family of Larry Jackson Jr. gathered for a vigil under the bridge on 38th Street, where he was killed.

One year ago to the day, Jackson was shot and killed by Austin Police Detective Charles Kleinert.

“How would anyone feel when they lose someone they love?” asked Larry’s stepfather, Larry Mercer, “That’s something we have to deal with.”

On July 26, 2013, Jackson showed up at a bank that had just been robbed, Detective Charles Kleinert was at the scene investigating.

Police said the detective began questioning Jackson after bank staff said they recognized him as a man who might try to defraud the bank.

When Jackson ran off after the detective questioned him, Kleinert followed the 32-year-old.

The chase ended at the bridge, where Kleinert shot and killed Jackson.

Kleinert says the deadly gunshot that hit Jackson in the neck was accidental.

Jackson’s family has pushing for justice ever since.

“No family should ever have to go through this because, it’s too much,” said Larry’s sister, LaKiza.

Friends, family and community members spoke at the vigil.

Kleinert is expected to return to court this Friday for a pre-trial hearing.

Jackson’s family says they will be there.
