Deadly crash shuts down I-35 south at Braker Lane

AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person died in a crash between two 18-wheeler trucks on southbound Interstate 35 early Wednesday morning.

Investigators say one big rig crashed into the back of the other, causing the load to shift and crumpling the cab of the truck in the back. At this point, the victim is only identified as a man in his 50s.

The two trucks wrecked between East Braker Lane and Tech Ridge Boulevard just before 3:30 a.m.

Austin police have closed down the main lanes of I-35 heading south, starting at Braker Lane. Officers are diverting traffic onto the frontage road, and they estimate the highway will be closed until 8 a.m.

Austin Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team is also working quickly to clean up a large diesel fuel spill that resulted from the crash. That spill area is several hundred feet long.

KXAN News will have live reports on the cleanup and status of the highway throughout the morning on KXAN News Today and into KXAN News on The CW Austin.
