CHAMPION: District offers a variety of summer activities

It’s hard to believe that it’s April. The 2013-14 school year is flying by. Even though the school year isn’t quite over, Leander ISD is already planning for summer. This week I want to make you aware of some fantastic opportunities your student can enjoy this June and July.

If you visit the LISD website at www.leanderisd.org and select Summer 2014 Information beneath the QuickLinks on the left-hand side of the page, you will find links for the district’s summer school, summer academic camps and summer sports camps.

LISD’s summer school is offered in June and July. Session I is June 16 through July 2 and is for middle school and high school students. Session II is July 14 to July 30 and is open only to high school students. Middle school students may attend summer school to recover credit, while high school students can take summer courses to recover credit or get ahead. Registration is open until summer school begins or until the classes are full. You can view the full list of classes on the LISD website, but before you register, your child will need to see his or her current campus guidance counselor prior to registering to get approval to take summer school courses. The cost for summer schools is $185 per session for in-district students.

The district offers a variety of academic camps during the summer, as well. One of the most popular is Camp Invention, a summer camp taught by LISD QUEST teachers. Camp Invention is designed to stretch students’ imagination and encourage complex thinking. It is open to all students currently in kindergarten through fifth grade. Camp will be held at Westside Elementary June 16-20 and July 21-25. The cost is $245, but several coupons and discounts are available. Unlike the other summer programs, registration for Camp Invention is managed through www.CampInvention.org and not through LISD. Look for more information about Camp Invention in the LISD Weekly Insider or email kathy.wood@leanderisd.org or sarah.hyde@leanderisd.org.

For students interested in fun learning activities this summer, LISD’s academic camps will focus on topics such as Spanish, American Sign Language, math, technology and science, AP US History, AP World History and writing. These are enjoyable and academically challenging activities that will help keep your child’s mind engaged during the long summer days. Camp fees range from $60-80. Go to the LISD website for a closer look at the camps and their descriptions.

To help keep students physically active when they are not in school, LISD is also offering a variety of sports this summer, including boys and girls basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, football, soccer, tennis, track and middle and high school strength and conditioning. More information, as well as detailed descriptions of each camp, is available at www.leanderisd.org. If you have questions about summer sports camps you can email summersportscamps@leanderisd.org.

Space within the camps is limited and will likely fill up quickly, so register soon. You can register for summer school, academic and sports camps through www.leanderisd.org (for Camp Invention go to www.campinvention.org). Online registration for camps will not work on a mobile device. Please make your selections carefully, as there are no refunds.

Leander ISD is committed to providing a safe, fun and quality summer learning experience for all students, whether it’s through summer school, academic camps or sports camps.
