CENSUS: Cedar Park is 4th fastest-growing city in the nation

CEDAR PARK — Cedar Park is the fourth fastest-growing city in the nation, according to population estimates released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to the Census, Cedar Park’s population grew 4.67 percent, adding 6,674 new residents in just one year. The Census Bureau compared its population estimates for Cedar Park from 51,283 people on July 1, 2011, to 57,957 people for the year ending July 1, 2012.

Cedar Park Mayor Matt Powell believes that Cedar Park’s unique charm and quality of life are driving the numbers, and says he sees both huge potential and great responsibility as result.

“As we welcome each new resident to Cedar Park, we maintain our focus on enhancing quality of life through public safety, city services, and job creation,” Powell said.

The Census estimates are no surprise to city officials, who are in the midst of the comprehensive planning process to help determine how Cedar Park will look and feel over the next 20 years, and residents still have an opportunity to share their ideas and opinions via the city’s interactive social media website www.ImagineCedarPark.com.

Some tangible results of the previous comprehensive plan include Cedar Park Center, Cedar Park Regional Medical Center, and the multi-spectrum shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities offered at 1890 Ranch.

Census population estimates pertain only to people living within city borders, and do not take into consideration those residing in a city’s Extra Territorial Jurisdiction.  Cedar Park estimates that it serves an additional 23,000 people living in its ETJ, bringing the city’s population estimate for its entire service area to around 80,000 people.
