Suspects caught in jewelry store theft

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Two suspects were arrested after a pair of robbery attempts in Round Rock on Monday.

Brandon Maldonado, 19, and Alexander Mejicano, 18, were apprehended by police Monday night after a woman reported the two men had robbed her at gunpoint at 2811 La Frontera.

Earlier in the day, Round Rock Police responded to a robbery at the QT jewelry store in the La Frontera shopping area just after 4:00p.m.

After the suspects displayed a gun and demanded everything in the store, the storeowner shot at the suspects several times causing them to flee.

“This all has been very stressful,” said QT jewelry store owner Peter Nguyen. “I wasn’t able to sleep last night, so I’m glad they caught the guy.”

Despite a coordinated search, including air support from the Austin Police Department, the suspects were not immediately caught.

Around 9:50 p.m., after receiving a call about the armed robbery at 2811 La Frontera, police conducted a search of the area and found the suspects in an apartment complex about a mile away.

The two men were arrested and the property stolen from the woman was recovered.

During an interview with Round Rock detectives, the suspects confessed to robbing the jewelry store earlier in the day.

On Tuesday, a sign on the jewelry store’s door let patrons know that it would be closed for business to repair damages caused by the shootout.

Monday’s crime wasn’t the first robbery attempt at the QT jewelry store. In February , the store was robbed by a woman who lit a fire in a trash can  in order to escape from the building. She has not yet been caught.

Despite the string of robberies, Nguyen said he has no plans of moving locations.

“Everyone is OK here and we are not moving anywhere,” Nguyen said.

The two suspects in Monday’s case are charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

QT jewelry says they are now relying on the community to help them get through this difficult time.
