N. TX storms strand passengers at ABIA
AUSTIN (KXAN) – Severe storms in North Texas have affected air travelers all across the country, including here in Austin, where at least 20 incoming and outgoing flights to and from Dallas/Fort Worth were canceled Tuesday evening.
“When I went online and tried to get my boarding pass, they wouldn’t let me. So, I was trying to figure out what was going on and when I got here, went up to the (kiosk) and it said I need to talk to an agent,” said Marcellas Flenory. “(They said) the flight was canceled.”
Flenory was hoping to head back to his home in Dallas Tuesday evening, but instead is staying in a hotel room Tuesday night. He, like many who were at the airport, were glued to the tornado coverage playing on the television screens.
“I have family up there. My wife is up there. My mom and my niece. So, kind of concerned,” he said.
At Austin Bergstrom International Airport , all American Airlines flights to and from Dallas to Austin were canceled. Some Southwest flights also never got off the ground. Several passengers waited hours hoping their delayed flight would take off. But not all of them did, and many passengers took the situation as best they could.
“I was supposed to catch my flight this afternoon, so I’ll just find a hotel here in Austin, shack up there for the night and then catch an early flight tomorrow morning. Push my meetings back tomorrow morning and just try to be really efficient while I’m in Dallas for a couple of hours,” said Hillary Venderzee. “You’ve got to understand with all the weather and things like that, it’s for the best. For everyone to be safe. And I’m here anyway. If I were going home, totally different conversation. If the airport in Denver was closed because of the snow I would be very angry.”
“Very excited to spend time in Austin. But now I get to spend three nights in Austin instead of two,” she said.
