2 dead in car-into-school-bus crash

BURNET, Texas (KXAN) – A school bus with children aboard was involved in a crash with a vehicle between Bertram and Burnet on Thursday afternoon.

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed initially that one person was killed, the 16-year-old female driver. However, they later confirmed a second person, the 14-year-old male passenger was also killed.

The wreck occurred at 4:15 p.m. near County Road 252 and State Highway 29 , Burnet school district officials said.

A witness waiting near the road to pick up his grandchildren from their bus stop said he saw a small car hit the school bus from the rear. He estimated the car’s speed at around 60 mph and said the car’s roof was sheared off as it went under the bus.

A photo sent in by an anonymous KXAN viewer who said he obtained it from Facebook shows a small car slammed into and under the rear of the school bus.

Police officials shut down Highway 29 in both directions and could not immediately say when it would reopen.
